An author of adult and children's books said in an interview, that if a story did not provide hope then it was not a children's book.
I hear and see so many instances of adults saying and doing things around children that are so filled with despair and doubt.
"You will never change.."
"You will always..."
"You never will.."
"It is just the way it is, so don't argue"
Every one of these sentiments, no matter how they are worded, reflects Hopelessness
It also occurred to me that even though adults do not appreciate it; children who cope by anger and aggressive behavior, however much problems it can cause those around them and through that themselves, are generally much more resilient than those children who consistently employ a coping strategy of withdrawal. Because anger and engagement contains at least an implicit hope in the ability of the own person having an impact and relevance, and in the possibility that life and the world can change for the better. Someone who sees neither have no other recourse than to try to escape.
I have myself said, and heard others say, regretfully that
"All I can give is hope"
As I see it now, Hope is the one key thing that anyone CAN give that makes all and any other efforts to assist matter. And I believe that in the case of me wanting to work as care provider; whatever the title or the contract says I am not truly a provider of care if I don't provide hope.
So if you give hope, then you have given much much more than had you given everything BUT hope.
